A clear edge for the timeless favourite – Cameo illuminates contemporary opera Don Juan no existe

The premise of Don Juan no existe – an opera about Don Juan in which Don Juan does not exist – is to intentionally provoke a reaction: The contemporary work by composer Helena Cánovas celebrated its world premiere in 2024 and centres around a character who has shaped opera history for centuries, but is deliberately deconstructed and reinterpreted here. This idea of changing perspectives is woven throughout the entire production. Instead of opulent imagery, clear lines, carefully defined spaces, and a controlled, modern aesthetic dominate. For the lighting design, this meant less embellishing, more storytelling, editing, and guiding. A special challenge for Antonio Gutiérrez, Production Manager and Lighting Designer at Soniluc Producciones, who in tandem with the agency Gestora de Nuevos Proyectos, were responsible for the technical realisation at the Real Fábrica de Artillería in Seville.

“Don Juan no existe has a very clear visual identity with a contemporary, minimalist aesthetic that reinterprets classical theatre,” explains Antonio Gutiérrez. Light plays an important role here as a dramatic device: “The colour scheme of the production consists almost entirely of white and blue tones to highlight the cool and abstract nature of the piece.” At the same time, Gutiérrez works with distinct light edges and precisely defined spaces of light. Instead of elaborate set changes, new stage designs are created via light movements and the activation or deactivation of individual light zones on the stage.

Clear edges

Cameo AZOR SP2 Spot Profile Moving Heads play a decisive role in the lighting design. As profile lights, they clearly delineate areas, direct the audience’s gaze, and enable precise cuts to characters and stage areas: “We were very impressed by the optical quality and the shutter system that ensure clear light edges on the stage,” confirms Gutiérrez.

As wash lights, the Cameo EVOS W7s provide even overall coverage and a stable, consistent colour base that serves as the visual foundation for the entire production. The set-up is rounded off by the EVOS W3 for more precise wash applications and lighting accents. Most notably, Antonio Gutiérrez highlights the zoom capability of the compact LED wash moving heads: “Thanks to the very tight zoom, the light can be precisely directed onto specific areas, which gives us significantly more flexibility in stage design.” The uniform colour rendering of the EVOS models was likewise crucial in the visual quality of the production: “As the EVOS W7 and EVOS W3 share the same LED source, we are able to work with the same colours across all stage zones without any visible differences between the models.”

Precision and reliability

“For an opera production like this, the lighting’s visual precision and technical performance are crucial,” says Antonio Gutiérrez, summarising the determining factors for choosing Cameo Moving Lights. In addition, the devices need to run very quietly without disturbing the stage experience with mechanical noises.

The work between the technical and artistic teams of Don Juan no existe was coordinated in intensive rehearsals, in which positions, intensities, and other lighting design elements were progressively fine-tuned – from initial individual tests to use with the entire cast. Looking back, Antonio Gutiérrez’s conclusion is clear: “The Cameo lights worked at peak level, both during rehearsals and performances.”

“Thanks to the very tight zoom, the light can be precisely directed onto specific areas, which gives us significantly more flexibility in stage design.”
