LD Systems MAILA provides the sound for the ATROPICA Festival at the LIFESTEIL boutique hotel

360° sound in the Alpine jungle

When a tropically themed boutique hotel in the Tyrolean Alps becomes the stage for a three-day indoor DJ festival, club culture meets Alpine panorama – and modern sound technology meets challenging room architecture. At the ATROPICA Festival, around 800 guests enjoyed a stylish break at the LIFESTEIL Hotel, which opened in 2023, with sundowners, an Alpine brunch and energetic DJ sets. For the 360° sound system in the extraordinary festival location in the hotel’s atrium, the WILDERNESS STUDIOS event technology team relied on the MAILA line array system from LD Systems.

Music at the heart

The architectural centrepiece of the hotel is the atrium: a 25-metre-high gallery surrounded by plants and with wraparound balconies and a glass roof, which was transformed into the central main floor of the ATROPICA Festival. Surrounded by a dancing audience, headliners such as Toby Romeo, Format:B and Noel Holler performed on a circular DJ stage. The special challenge: even sound distribution across all levels, with a warm, rich sound on the dance floor and at the same time clear speech intelligibility for presentation and show elements.

“For us, the MAILA system was the perfect choice for this 360° sound experience – in terms of both audio and visuals. You can tell that the system was designed for modern formats like this: it is quick to set up, easy to use and flexible in its application – exactly what we needed. Imagine: tropical plants, people dancing on several levels, DJs in the centre – the sound just has to be right.”

Florian Fellier, Managing Director of WILDERNESS STUDIOS

Efficient MAILA setup

A MAILA set of four COL column modules with integrated DSP amplifier was used, each combined with four passive MAILA SAT array satellites, complemented by eight MAILA SUB 2 × 15" bandpass subwoofers positioned on the floor around the DJ stage. Thanks to the intelligent system architecture and wireless communication between the elements, the MAILA setup was set up in a very short time and precisely calibrated using the MAILA app – including delay optimisation for the surrounding galleries. In this way, the WILDERNESS STUDIOS team set up the system so that the sound radiated in a circle around the stage, covering both the ground floor and the upper galleries. The MAILA setup for the main sound system was supplemented by several LD Systems STINGER 10 A G3s for monitoring the DJs.

The following LD Systems products were used at the ATROPICA Festival:

04 × MAILA S line array system
02 × STINGER 10 A G3 10’’ 2-way bass reflex PA loudspeaker
