Cameo H1 FC in Teatre de la Passió

Sustainable and flexible house lighting

Teatre de la Passió d'Olesa de Montserrat in Barcelona is one of Catalonia’s most impressive theatre spaces. With its 782 square metre stage, six hydraulic lifting platforms, and space for up to 1,490 spectators, the theatre, which opened in 1987, is perfect for large productions, especially for the performances of its theatrical production, which is staged every year and gives the theatre its name, La Passió d'Olesa. Aside from theatre performances, the building also regularly serves as a venue for conferences, award ceremonies, concerts, and other events. The hall lighting was also replaced in 2025 as part of the technical modernisation. The technical service provider Joanet Producció Técnica was responsible for the planning and implementation, using H1 FC Houselights from Cameo for the hall lighting – and worked in close collaboration with lighting designer Susana Barea, who specialises in architectural lighting design.

Architecture, atmosphere, and energy efficiency

“The aim of the new hall lighting was to create more visual harmony, safety, and design quality while at the same time significantly improving energy efficiency,” explains Susana Barea. Originally, the auditorium was illuminated with power-intensive halogen PAR lights, which were characterised by high-energy usage, minimal control, and restricted light distribution.

Upgrading to LED technology made it possible to completely eliminate these disadvantages. “The H1 FC from Cameo is the ideal solution for us,” confirms Barea. “They combine architectural elegance with lighting flexibility, packed into a compact housing.” Thanks to various beam angles and different room heights of between two and eight metres, the team was able to achieve uniform illumination – without any dark zones or glare.

“The H1 FC made it possible for us to enhance the lighting mood of the room, not only functionally but also emotionally – the entire auditorium now feels more three-dimensional, elegant, and adaptable.”

Connecting technology with existing conditions – and overcoming challenges

The installation of a total of 48 Cameo H1 FCs proved to be a challenge due to the structural conditions. “The old lights were built into the ceiling grid – replacing them would have required massive interventions nine metres above the ground,” explains Joan Gil from Joanet Producció Técnica. The solution: new fixing points on the supporting structures that allow the H1 FC Lights to be optimally positioned in a safe, efficient, and removable manner.

Another advantage was the precise controllability of the new houselights: “We operate the H1 FCs in 19-channel mode via two DMX universes with RDM-capable splitters and nodes,” explains Joan Gil. This means that not only brightness and colour temperature can be precisely adjusted, but also scenic colour changes or spatial divisions in the auditorium can be implemented – for example, if only some of the 1,490 seats are being used. The team was thus able to reduce the total number of lights in the theatre by over 20 while at the same time increasing flexibility.

“The H1 FC allows us to use the hall as a real part of the production – whether with subtle ambient lighting or as an immersive extension of the stage.”

Thanks to the new hall lighting, Teatre de la Passió d'Olesa has taken an important step towards sustainable, scenically applicable lighting technology without compromising the theatre’s architectural character. With the H1 FCs from Cameo, the venue now combines energy efficiency, visual quality, and technical controllability at the highest level – to the delight of technicians, artists, and audiences alike.
